Post Brexit trailing tips.

Taking your boat abroad has become more regulated since the UK left the European Union on the 31st December.

The UK Government have yet to completely agree with our close neighbours in Europe on UK vehicles towing trailers in Europe. This means the rules will probably be subject to change but in the meantime the RYA have produced some detailed information which they have published here.

In summary, there are four critical areas to look into to check you are fully legal for your trip abroad:

  1. At least 6 months left on your passport and the passport must not be more than 10 years old.
  2. You must display a GB Sticker on the rear of your vehicle. (GB with the EU stars on your number plate is not acceptable.)
  3. You need a Green Card for both your vehicle and the boat to prove you have insurance cover for both.
  4. UK drivers should check here if you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) An IDP may be needed in the EU in some circumstances.

Lastly, as and when we are allowed to travel abroad, you are likely to need proof of a negative COVID test but you obviously need to check the precise requirements at the time!
